The Netherlands is the world’s second-largest agricultural exporter. It’s a remarkable achievement built on decades of productivity and scale. But beneath that success, the system is under growing pressure.

Soils are degrading, biodiversity has fallen to just 15% of its natural baseline, nitrogen surpluses are among the highest in Europe, and many farmers face structurally low and volatile incomes.

The system isn’t broken by accident. It’s designed this way. And what is designed can be redesigned.

For more than a decade, Enviu has been building ventures that tackle food system challenges in East Africa. Now we’re bringing those lessons to the Dutch agrifood transition.

In our latest Issue Analysis, we’ve explored the root causes behind today’s challenges and identified high-potential opportunity areas where new ventures could create systemic change.

In fact, we’re already validating several of these opportunities with farmers, businesses, and ecosystem partners. We’re testing assumptions, refining value propositions, and shaping ventures designed to change how the system works.

Curious where the biggest opportunities lie?
