A 0% food chain is our big hairy ambitious goal. How? By building and scaling local, commercial companies that radically improve professionalism and efficiency across the domestic fruit and vegetable value chain, starting in Kenya.
Nearly 50% of harvested fruit- and vegetables in Kenya is lost before it reaches the customer. At the same time many people suffer from malnutrition and shortages of micronutrients. Kenya already is a net importer of many fruit and vegetables and with a third more mouths to feed in 2050, food security should be the no. 1 focus.
Kenya needs professional food value chains to improve food security and increase the income of the smallholder farmer. A steady and higher income for the farmer enables him or her to invest in new sustainable and more efficient ways of producing. We believe reducing post-harvest food loss is a flywheel to driving sustainable change in the Kenyan food system.
Within FoodFlow we will be showcasing a professional value chain for mangos, avocados and green beans. We are piloting and integrating 3 key interventions in one chain; rental cold storage at farm level, online market linkage (to wholesale buyers) and a rental processing model. By sharing our learnings and building these interventions as third party businesses, this showcase chain will scale to many other crops and regions in the near future. Inspiring also others to work on market-led food system change.
