Sachets provide low-income customers with easy access to household essentials such as shampoo, dish soap and detergent. Sachets cannot be recycled and are thus bound to leak into the environment. An estimated 5.5 million of single-use sachets for detergent alone are wasted daily in Indonesia, hence the need for Koinpack’s solution.
Koinpack operates a tech-enabled reusable packaging system for consumer goods on a deposit and reward model to replace sachets and other types of single-use packaging. With a focus on such replacements, Koinpack is reducing usage of one of the most polluting types of packaging by offering local warungs, mini markets and waste-banks a reuse option for their daily need. This prevents single-use packages from being created altogether and provides brands with a simple zero-waste opportunity to sell their products whilst also giving consumers more value for their money.
Koinpack kicked off its first pilot program at 2 sales points in March 2020. By November 2020, we started in 15 sales points. Sales quickly went to around 20 products per sales point per week, saving around 4,000 sachets per month.
