In Indonesia, this digital solution is turning waste into a small business opportunity

Plastic waste remains one of Indonesia’s greatest challenges, with 4.9 million tons mismanaged annually and rivers like the Ciliwung carrying plastic into the ocean. Alner tackles this issue by working hand in hand with micro-retailers — the waste banks, warungs, and family-run stores that are the heartbeat of local communities.

By offering everyday products in returnable packaging, Alner gives retailers a new way to serve customers, earn income, and reduce plastic pollution. For example, Rozak Ardian’s Melati Waste Bank in South Jakarta has transformed from a small recycling initiative into a micro-retailer, boosting his income and turning neighbors into circular economy participants. Similarly, Nur Syamsiah’s warung has become both a store and a waste collection point, making sustainability a part of daily life in her neighborhood.

Backed by a Mastercard Strive Innovation Fund grant, Alner digitized its operations with an app that helps retailers order stock, track returns, and unlock discounts. The results speak for themselves:

10% rise in packaging returns

1,000+ micro-retailers reached in Jakarta

200+ actively using the app

20% increase in app engagement

Everyday household products packaged in returnable containers offered through Alner’s platform to reduce single-use plastic waste.
