Nearly 70% of Gen Z teens say sustainability shapes what they buy, especially when it comes to fashion. That is a number far higher than their Baby Boomer counterparts (Mintel). For a generation that prides itself on individuality and self-expression, unique thrifted fits aren’t just a style choice, they’re a statement.

Enter Qilin: a peer-to-peer marketplace built for India’s Gen Z, sitting right at the crossroads of style, sustainability, and thrift culture. At a time when fast fashion has left wardrobes overflowing with barely-worn clothes, our venture Qilin offers a way to keep fashion fresh while extending the life of every garment.

And here’s why it matters: fashion is among the world’s most polluting industries, and in India, secondhand shopping is still weighed down by stigma and disorganization.

But Qilin is breaking that mold by making thrifting aspirational, safe, and inclusive.

Through this platform, young people can easily resell clothes to each other with door-to-door pickup, secure delivery, and built-in buyer protection. Textile recovery facilities like Saahas and Greenworms also join in, channeling high-quality recovered garments into a high-value resale market.

Why Gen Z matters in the sustainability movement

Gen Z is emerging as the first generation that’s both fashion-forward and climate-conscious. They also have massive buying power and cultural influence across platforms like Instagram, YouTube, and Pinterest.

This generation wants unique fits that stand out, values aspirational fashion at accessible prices (who can say no to 60–70% off a branded piece?), and sees secondhand as a way to express individuality while scoring a deal. Whether motivated by environmental concerns or simply by culture and aesthetics, one thing is clear: for Gen Z, decluttering closets, finding fresh styles, and embracing easy, transparent solutions are part of the new normal in fashion.

Influencers as cultural catalysts

Anna Boessneck, Venture Builder at Enviu Textiles:

“We knew from the start that if we wanted to make secondhand fashion aspirational for Gen Z in India, we had to meet them where they live: online.”

This is a generation that grew up immersed in social media, looking to influencers and digital communities not only for style inspiration, but also for cues on what brands to trust and even what values to align with. For them, fashion is deeply aspirational. It’s about individuality, expression, and status and influencers are the cultural catalysts who can reframe secondhand from “pre-loved” to “unique.”

“That’s why we launched our influencer program. By collaborating with micro- and nano-influencers, we tapped into voices Gen Z already sees as authentic, relatable, and trustworthy. Instead of polished ads, we focused on storytelling: encouraging young people to declutter their closets, resell what they no longer wear, and discover thrifted pieces that feel fresh, stylish, and one-of-a-kind. The goal wasn’t just to drive transactions, but to break stigma, spark conversation, and show that resale can be both cool and aspirational.”

For Qilin, influencers became the bridge, helping us validate early interest in a cost-effective way, while building the cultural momentum needed to turn secondhand into a lifestyle and a movement.

Qilin’s role in making thrifting cool & scalable

The venture positions itself as more than a resale marketplace by focusing on the recirculation of clothes and extending their use. To build awareness and normalize thrifting, the platform is currently collaborating with influencers who present secondhand fashion as stylish, aspirational, and accessible.

“At present, we’re working with nine content creators across India, who have produced 14 reels highlighting the brand’s mission. These activations have contributed to growing visibility and user sign-ups.”

Turning thrifting into a movement

With Gen Z’s blend of style-consciousness and climate-awareness, they are driving the sustainable fashion movement faster than any generation before them. And Qilin is proud to be at the center of this shift, creating a trusted, transparent platform that not only makes thrifting accessible but also turns it into a cultural statement.
